Students Mentoring Students Bursary Application

Thank you  for your interest in volunteering with Boys & Girls Club Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area. Through this application, we will be asking you to provide basic personal, demographic and contact information. Our agency uses information gathered in a professional manner, information will be kept confidential based on agency policy. 

Prior to starting the application, please take a moment to gather emails and phone contact information for your references. There are 3 types of references that are required, they are as follows;
            1.Significant Other/Partner or Family Reference. 
            2.Supervisor Reference (Volunteer or Employment). If you have volunteered/worked within the vulnerable sector please provide your supervisor/lead for that work.
            3.Personal/Friend Reference. Must have known you for minimum two years.

Your Commitment

  • 100 post-secondary students will be a mentor to two (2) young people from October 2024 through April 2025.
  • Each mentor will spend one (1) hour per week with each young person (2 hours max.).
  • School loations include one of our All In for Youth (AIFY) Schools:
    • St. Alphonsus Elementary/Junior High
    • John A McDougall Elementary
    • Delton Elementary
    • Spruce Avenue Junior High
    • Ivor Dent Elementary/Junior High
    • Abbot Elementary
    • Norwood Elementary
  • Additional school locations include:
    • Meyokumin School (limited space available)
    • St. Elizabeth School (limited space available)
    • Ecole Gabrielle Roy (Francophone school)
  • Because mentoring takes place during school hours, in order to fulfill your commitment, you will need approximately two (2) hours available between 9:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays or between 9:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. on Thursdays.
Successful completion of the program requires:
  • Spend approximately 40 hours mentoring in addition to completing 15-20 hours of enrollment, training and match monitoring requirements.
  • Participate in mandatory online training(s)
  • Complete a sign-in/sign-out form for every mentoring session
  • Remain in good standing for the duration of the volunteer commitment
  • Submit Bursary Application Form to Volunteer Alberta.

All  successful applicants will be required to:

  1. Apply to the SMSB program via the CNiP website
  2. Complete the BGCBigs online application form
  3. Provide three (3) references
  4. Provide proof of post-secondary enrollment
  5. Complete a Police Information Check
  6. Complete a Child & Youth Intervention Record Check
  7. Complete a pre-screen and interview (2.5 hrs)
